The Centenary Pop Quiz attracts nine teams for eleven rounds of musical mayhem at Plinston. Thanks to Andrew
Watson for organising half of tonight’s questions! The mighty ‘Wet Blanket’
team shake themselves out of bed, get their heads down and do more than just dream of winning the trophy. They actually go home with it!
|
The Urban Design Alliance’s ‘Placecheck’ community audit reaches a climax in the Spirella Ballroom with a one-day
conference workshop involving local residents and professionals from property and planning circles. Thanks to the hard work of my colleague, Richard Baker the day is a great success providing valuable feedback to
the Foundation and the District Council on town centre, housing, landscape and youth issues. The conference begins with marvellous presentations by Stuart Kenny, Civic Trust CEO Martin Bacon and Dr Mervyn Miller.

Paul Palmer’s exhaustive Centenary ‘Know your Letchworth’ walks and talks programme reaches its conclusion in the
Spirella Ballroom. It is the culmination of a great deal of hard work by Paul. Great to congratulate and thank Paul on stage at the end of the evening (and Yvonne too)! Paul’s has been a truly
outstanding personal contribution to Letchworth’s rather special year!
|
One hundred years ago exactly! Stuart Kenny and Cllr Howard Marshall, standing in for Cllr David Barnard, plant a
Centenary Oak at Howard Paddling Pool Gardens watched by Ebenezer’s grandson Tony Rawlinson, staff and Board members from both the Foundation and the Council.

North Hertfordshire District Council unveil their rather excellent ‘Paradise Is’ Centenary sculpture.
Light refreshments follow at the Brotherhood Hall - a great occasion!

Stuart Kenny announces the countdown to a most spectacular fireworks event on Norton Common. Sadly, the event is severely
curtailed at the last minute. Yes, there is some disappointment at the ‘no live music’ event, nevertheless, it’s a great night for Letchworth enjoyed by over 10,000 locals.

Paul Palmer’s walk series visits ‘Ebenezer’s Dream’ – a fascinating trail of the early Garden City and Cheap Cottage
exhibition houses.

Heritage Open Days as over 30 Letchworth historic buildings and churches open their doors. Over 3,600 visitors register at
Spirella alone. On the first morning, I manage to escape ‘castle corset’ briefly to visit St Paul’s, St Georges and, of course, Central Methodist Hall where there’s even time for a cup of tea and a cake with
Valerie Andrews and her mum and son Wesley.
