Celebrating
fifty years, the Letchworth Arcadians return to the Garden City for a special show at Plinston.
|
A very special
occasion held in the Nexus Building for players from the international mixed hockey
teams of England and Wales. There are short speeches from Stuart Kenny and Letchworth Corner Sports Club’s Bruce Carr. The teams compete the next day at the Whitethorn Lane. England are narrow winners.

A trip to the
Museum of Docklands to take part in a launch for the republication of Ebenezer Howard’s seminal text ‘Tomorrow: a peaceful path to real reform’. The event is organised by the TCPA. Stuart Kenny
joins Sir Peter Hall and David Lock on the panel with The Guardian’s Peter Hetherington in the chair. Ebenezer’s grandchildren Tony Rawlinson and Betty Rowlands are in the audience tonight. Pic above by Alan Howard

Terry Gray’s excellent ‘Sportathon’ event attacts over 3,000
participants and spectators on a glorious summer’s day at the Rugby Club / Leisure Centre site. There are adults and 8-11s (yr olds) ‘it’s a knock-out’ contests, a five-a-side soccer tournament organised by
Letchworth Garden City Eagles Secretary, Kevin Bowles, live music and sideshows.

A most momentus weekend in the heart of the Garden City as two key roads – Leys Avenue and Eastcheap - are completely closed
to traffic. There are many live music stages, the biggest in Leys Square, showcasing the finest local talent.

Over 450 Letchworth school pupils join Nick Skinner’s inspired massed musical performance at midday on

Hertfordshire Preservation Trust’s ‘Design for Living’ conference
brings the area’s building conservationists together for a series of informative presentations.

Letchworth Garden City Band
– an institution almost as old as the Garden City itself – stage the world premiere of a piece of music which has been specially commissioned for the Centenary. Written by the acclaimed composer, Phillip Lawrence, this challenging work is warmly received by a packed Spirella Ballroom.

SPADS take over Plinston for three performances of their special Centenary presentation ‘A Palace of Varieties’.

The official re-opening ceremonies to celebrate the completion of North Hertfordshire District Council’s excellent £1.25m
scheme to create the new Broadway Gardens. HRH The Duke of Gloucester joins Cllr David Barnard
on Friday 6 June. The next day brings a large sound stage and a programme of live drama and music co-ordinated by The Place. Colour illustration

The International Federation of Housing and Planning brings 150 delegates from all over the world
to Letchworth. Stuart Kenny charts the development of Ebenezer Howard’s dream from initial conception through to fruition. Letchworth may not be perfect but it is about as good as it gets! There’s a dinner at the Liberal Club hosted by William Sutton Trust at the close of the second day.
